“On Mars” – 3D Footwear Design

Design Goal


Design an ingenious 3D footwear model that embodies the core values
(performance, comfort, innovation and sustainability) and aesthetics of On
Running, taking as a start point the image provided and not deviating to much
from the 3D model shape provided.

Inspirations


My journey began with thorough research, immersing myself in On Running’s
technologies and analyzing user reviews to identify key areas and trends for
improvement. Armed with this knowledge, I set out to create the “On Mars”
Footwear, a fusion of innovation, style, and comfort.
I was then in the pursuit of an audacious vision – to design a 3D footwear model
that encapsulates the very essence of On Running’s essence.
Drawing inspiration from the untamed beauty of the desert, the promise of
innovative technologies, and the classy of On Running’s footwear, i embarked on
a quest to create something that i think is extraordinary.

Design choices


Looking forward to achieve perfection, I set out to design a versatile sneaker
designed for running, walking, and hiking, tailor-made to withstand the harshest
of environments.
Picture a sneaker capable of conquering rocky trails, enduring desert sands, and
strutting down urban streets.
I applied the prowess of On Running’s technologies, including CloudTec and
Speedboard, to enhance performance.
My design path involved a careful blend of these key elements: the hostile
environment, generative design, and aesthetic grace.

Alignment with On Running Identity


At it‘s heart, On Running signifies classy, comfort, performance, resilience and
innovation – values we’ve woven into the very fabric of this footwear model.
My color palette draws inspiration from the Martian landscape, infusing a futuristic
tech aesthetic that commands attention on runways and in the dunes.
The „pièce de résistance“ is the sole, ingeniously designed with innovative
suspension cylinders for an exhilarating boost. And true to On Running’s
commitment to unprecedented comfort, my design retains their signature
cushioning system, ensuring every step is a plush stride.
I was also influenced by the On Running recycling principles to use sustainable
and recyclable materials; so that the brand continues to make a step towards a
greener planet.

Design Process

Shape Design (AI, 3D scan, On running)

With the help of AI and using both the scan 3D model provided and one of the original models from On i went in a quest to achieve a reliable shape that would incorporate aspect from the concept created the ON shoes and the 3D model provided.

I explored a lot of different concepts to see one that would please visually the client but also had the brand aesthetics of ON connected to it. Some of this concepts were also created with the solo purpose to define a color pallet or give ideas for color pallets for the shoe even if he looked a lot different.

This landscape, reminiscent of Mars, merges technology with emptiness in a striking fusion. It imparts a simultaneous sense of warmth and cold, reflecting a future where innovation thrives amidst desolation.

This lines were one of the inspirations for the back tube and the large back, i could have gone a bit more “speed, alien” aesthetics but it would deviate to much from the classy look.

My Design Journey: Crafting an ON Running Shoe Concept

Gathering Inspiration and Research: I embarked on an exhilarating design by immersing myself in a world of inspiration and research. It all began with a mix of references: a captivating image, precise 3D scans, and ON Running shoes that embodied the aesthetics I aspired to achieve. My journey took me deep into the realm of ON Running’s cutting-edge technologies, where I explored the wonders of CloudTec, the intricacies of the Speedboard, and the sustainable marvels of renewable textiles. This research was vital to understanding the brand’s essence.

But I didn’t stop there. I craved real-world insights, seeking wisdom from ON Running’s clientele through video reviews. These firsthand accounts gave me invaluable perspectives on what truly mattered in a running shoe. To capture the essence of a desert rocky environment, I delved into a comprehensive video guide (https://youtu.be/Pc0KoC2w574) that spelled out the terrain’s unique challenges and footwear requirements. I absorbed every detail, though I didn’t want my design to be overly constrained by these conditions since i wasn’t sure it this was a point to take into consideration.

Defining the Audience and Charting the Course: With a treasure trove of research at my disposal, I meticulously defined the target audience, understanding their needs, desires, and aspirations. Armed with this insight, I was ready to set sail on the seas of creativity.

Conceptualization and Design Exploration: My creative voyage led me to the shores of conceptualization. AI-powered design tools became my companions as I conjured a multitude of design concepts. I explored diverse combinations, weaving together elements that resonated with my artistic sensibilities. Each design told a unique story, an intricate dance between catering to environmental demands and unleashing the wings of design freedom.

Choosing the Path Less Traveled: As my designs unfolded, I faced a pivotal moment. I had to select one design that would carry my vision forward. It had to be a design that harmonized with ON Running’s signature aesthetics and stayed true to the contours revealed by the 3D scan. Yet, I couldn’t ignore the practicalities of production. I had to tread carefully to ensure the design was not only beautiful but also feasible.

Creating the Blueprint in Blender: With a chosen path in sight, I ventured into the digital realm of Blender. Here, I crafted a 3D blockout of my vision, methodically focusing on individual design elements while never losing sight of the grand tapestry. It was a process of relentless refinement, a journey through the intricacies of form and function.

Transcending with ZBrush: From Blender, I transported my creation into ZBrush, a realm where colors, textures, and details burst into life. My color palette, a challenge in itself, featured brown, beige, blue, and orange – a symphony of earthy and vibrant hues. Every stroke of the digital brush carried with it the weight of visual appeal and functionality.

Iterating and Seeking Perfection: The design process was a continuous loop of iteration. I sought feedback, listened to insights, and refined my creation. It was a quest for perfection, a dance between my artistic instincts and the constraints of reality.

The Grand Finale: Presenting My Vision: As the journey reached its zenith, I ensured my design met every predefined criterion and objective. With precision, I crafted a concise yet impactful presentation that showcased the essence of my creation.

Crafting an Impactful Presentation: In order to effectively communicate and “sell” my design, I would meticulously prepare a presentation pitch. This presentation would not only showcase the design but also provide a compelling narrative. I would deconstruct design choices in both broad and fashion-specific terms, appealing to emotions and aesthetics. The goal would be to make a persuasive case for the design, emphasizing how it aligns with ON Running’s brand identity and objectives.

Research

CloutTec

It consists of hollowed rubber tubes, often referred to as “Clouds,” which are strategically placed underneath the footbed. These Clouds serve as a unique and innovative cushioning system that enhances the running experience.

The way CloudTec works can be broken down into several key aspects:

  1. Soft Landing: When a runner’s foot strikes the ground, the Cloud elements compress to cushion both vertical and horizontal impact. This provides a soft and comfortable landing, similar to running on sand, which helps reduce the risk of impact-related pain and injuries.
  2. Firm Takeoff: As the foot begins its transition and pushes off the ground, the Clouds lock firmly in place, creating a solid foundation for a powerful and secure takeoff. This ensures that the natural running gait is not disrupted, allowing for an efficient push-off.
  3. Adaptive Response: Each Cloud operates independently, adapting to the individual movement and needs of the runner’s foot. This feature allows for a more natural and personalized running experience, with the shoe responding to the runner’s specific gait and landing patterns.
  4. Integration with Speedboard: CloudTec works in conjunction with a Speedboard integrated into the midsole of the shoe. The Speedboard connects and stabilizes the Cloud elements, promoting an active running gait without imposing artificial guidance. Cyclon

Cyclon™ is a sustainability program introduced by the company “On” to promote circularity in their products, particularly the Cloudneo running shoe and the Cyclon-T running tee. Cyclon™ focuses on creating 100% recyclable and high-performance gear while minimizing waste and environmental impact.
